The slide on the security scale just went from less to more.īy asking the right questions and listening to their responses (as well as reading between the lines), you will be able to confidently put the proper security controls in place from the beginning. Are you under any compliance requirements?Īdditionally, if you hear any of the keywords below, take mental note. What information is going to be collected?.Some of the first questions during the discovery phase should be: No one likes adding expense and time to the project (surprise!) and by asking the right questions upfront, you can save a lot of headache down the road. By fully understanding their business and site goals, you’ll avoid last minute surprises during the build. Each site is unique, and depending on what your clients are going to do with theirs determines the layers of security needed. Security is not something that is on or off, but rather is on a continuum. We’ll go into these points in a little more detail below. There is no security silver bullet-you need to take a defense in depth approach. What compliance regulations your clients fall under (PCI DSS, HIPAA, FERPA, FISMA, etc.).What is personally identifiable information (PII)?.With (potential) clients hearing these stories, security becomes an easier sell.Īs an agency, there are a few key Drupal security concepts that you need to understand before talking with your clients: The company is in the process of handing iCloud encryption keys to account holders so that no matter how many government subpoenas it receives, Apple has no way to decrypt user data. With the importance of website security established, how do you start the security conversation with your clients? Are you asking the right questions during the discovery process? Do you know what questions to ask? With data breaches making headlines daily, security is top of mind and this conversation is more pertinent-and natural-than ever.įor example, the importance of key management is now resonating with the general public, thanks to Apple. It not only ensured their prospective clients that security was top of mind, but also instilled confidence in the competency of their agency. As an agency, you can and should reduce your risk by implementing proper security for your clients, even if it means taking money out of your bottom line.Īs many agencies that we interact with can attest, adding security as a line-item when responding to RFPs helped them win bids. of America (insurer) filed suit against the bank's web designer, claiming its negligence and “substandard” maintenance of a website set the stage for a breach. One example: In an effort to shift financial responsibility for a data breach at a community bank, Travelers Casualty and Surety Co. Further, by not implementing appropriate security controls, if there is a breach, you can be liable. Your clients expect site security, just as they expect you to anticipate and address their needs in other areas of site development. It may be true that your clients aren’t asking specifically for security, but they are paying you for it. SMBs typically have weaker security controls and are not taking a defense in depth approach to data security-often because they are just not aware of security best practices-not because of price.Īs Chris Teitzel, Drew Gorton, and myself discussed at DrupalCon New Orleans (video below), by having the security conversation and implementing proper security controls, Drupal agencies can not only better protect their clients, but also gain additional revenue and set themselves apart.īut My Clients Aren’t Asking Me for Security Symantec recently published a report confirming that three out of five cyber-attacks target small and midsize companies. Why? Because hackers know that SMBs are an easy target. In fact, it is often a surprise to small and medium sized businesses that they are actually considered a greater target than large enterprises. A company’s website is a portal to customer information, and if hacked, can lead to a very public breach resulting in loss of customers, fines, and brand damage.īusinesses large and small-public and private-have security needs. If they are going to collect private information or integrate external services like PayPal or MailChimp, it is time to sit down and have a discussion-about security. Have you had “the talk” with your clients? You know, the one where you tell them that if they are going to be doing it, they need to be safe. The playlists are user-generated on, and you can skip and pause songs with the app’s regular playback controls. Once you hit the 8tracks button, My Artists will open a new window, and start streaming a random playlist within seconds. The new control bar in the list view has also got buttons for quick play all and shuffle, surely a welcome addition for those who don’t always want to navigate to an artist’s page to start playing music. Whereas previous versions of My Artists wanted to put more information about your music at your fingertips – by displaying artists’ bios, related music, and videos – My Artists 2.0 brings actual new music to the mix thanks to an 8tracks button that’s always accessible from the main list view, which as usual pulls beautiful and high-res artist pics and album artworks from the web. Thanks to built-in integration with 8tracks, the “handcrafted Internet radio”, users can now listen to a personalized radio station with easy controls to jump through live-streaming songs from the popular online service. My Artists 2.0, released today, takes the whole concept a step further to become a full-featured music player and discovery system for all kinds of artists, not just the ones you already know and have on iTunes. My Artists 1.0 was a discovery tool for music already synced on an iPhone version 1.1 brought several interface improvements, whilst 1.2 focused on Last.fm support as in-app purchase, and made the app independent from iPod.app in that users could see My Artists’ icon in iOS 4’s multitasking tray. My Artists’ main goal, in fact, was to provide users with more information about songs and albums they were listening to, pulling data from the web as a way to showcase videos and songs from the same artist that, however, were not available on the device. When I first stumbled upon My Artists last year, what I found was a great companion for iOS’ native iPod app that allowed users to play songs they had synced on their iPhones with a different interface that, among other things, came with Wikipedia and YouTube integration. Therefore, you might want to use more precise mediums like colored pens to draw certain of these small specifics. There are spots on his face that are colored by darker greens. I think Xeoma could be a big hit with the home automation security market by making their software as open as possible to communicating with other programs for integration. They wouldn't really want to shell out money just for GPIO access (especially when you have to pay per camera). Customers that run Xeoma on a Raspberry PI do it because the device is cheap. With home automation and security being a huge thing lately I think they are shooting themselves in the foot with this. Things like such as GPIO and MQTT support are so easy to implement that paying for them just isn't worth it (I already use the HTTP Request Sender to send MQTT messages via Node-RED). I am totally fine with their more advanced modules such as Face/Emotion/Object Recognition costing more since they actually add a lot of value and insight. Things like MQTT & GPIO should be included without having to pay additional money (they basically are the same thing as the HTTP Request Sender or Application Runner and made me sad when they didn't include it into their software for free). One of the things that does bother me about Xeoma is how they want you to pay for all these little add-on modules (and usually pay per camera). This is one of the areas that Xeoma really shines as well as could use a little work. I didn't really see anything like this from the other apps available. I was even able to setup the software to turn on my driveway lights if motion was detected (by getting motion events into Home Assistant). What interested me the most about this was how you could customize so much about how the security camera works. Xeoma's flow based setup for cameras Node-RED flow It hit all of my checklist items and I was also really interested in the flow based setup that reminds me of Node-RED: It was nice to see a developer not focusing on Windows/Mac only. When I first read about Xeoma I was actually really intrigued. iSpy was pretty decent but access from other devices was non-existent (when I was using it) and it was Windows only. ZoneMinder was okay but the UI was old-school HTML and was very slow to use (especially when searching through the archive). I tried using Blue Iris but it was Windows only so that was a no-go. Great motion detection and filtering with area selection. Can run headless on my linux home server (I don't need a UI on my home server since it doesn't even have a monitor).Runs on my own home server and doesn't require internet access.Access from all my devices with a uniform UI (uniform UI keeps it nice especially for the Wife as she moves from the PC to her Phone). These are the main things I required when looking for security camera software: It's easy to shrug things off until something actually happens. Some people think that having a security setup like this is overkill but as someone who has had their house broken into I can tell you that it is necessary to keep you and your property safe. This is my honest review of the Xeoma software after using it for the last 4 years. YACReader remembers where you finished reading, so that when you return to a comic after exiting the app, you'll pick up where you left off-a nice touch. You cannot, however, flip the iPad into landscape so that YACReader displays two pages at a time (a function found in Comics and ComicRack). YACReader's automatic scrolling isn't nearly as impressive as Comics' Guided View, so if you're a fan of that particular feature, you may want to stick with Comixology's apps. Left or right swipes, naturally, turned pages. Should you want to tinker with a comic's presentation, pinching, zooming, and dragging the image around the screen are available options. Word bubbles and captions were legible so I didn't have to utilize the zoom feature. Rucka and Lark's Lazarus #1 looked fabulous on the iPad's 9.7-inch display. Comic fans with deep libraries will like the option to view comics in an alphabetical index or find them using the built-in search engine. Your collection lives in the My Comics section, which you can customize with three eye-catching layouts. (Opens in a new window) Read Our ComicRack (for iPad) Review I prefer ComicRack's Smart Lists as they automatically sorted new library additions into categories that I pre-defined, but ComicRack requires a computer to do so I created YACReader folders on the fly without the need for a Mac or PC. YACReader also lacks ComicRack's awesome Smart Lists, but you can create folders and sub-folders. That said, you can also transfer comics using iTunes (both wired and wirelessly) or Dropbox which is important, as YACReader lacks an integrated store like Comics. Like ComicRack, YACReader has a desktop client (available for Linux, Mac, and Windows) that lets you read, manage, and transfer comics to the iPad app. You'll need to download the Comics or Marvel Comics app if you want to read the latest Hawkeye issue, however. YACReader is an open comic-book reader that supports DRM-free CBR, CBZ, PDF, RAR, and ZIP files, which makes it a solid app for reading indie efforts and Image Comics' new DRM-less catalog. If you fancy yourself a digital comic book enthusiast, YACReader is well worth the purchase. YACReader lacks an integrated store like the Comics or Dark Horse Comics apps, but the app supports numerous comic-friendly file formats, import methods, and reading styles. Few mainstream publishers release DRM-free comics in the available formats.ĭoes the iPad need yet another comic reader? The answer is a resounding "yes." I had been keeping the sets separated to some degree with rubber bands. I knew I had an issue when I tried to find a particular set of cards in my cupboard one day. Let’s talk about keeping these babies organized and under control. Like the bulletin board from above, students can either visit this at a center or they can unpin a card and take it back to their seat. The second photo you see here shows task cards clothespinned to a springtime piece of decor that also came from Hobby Lobby. If you do a “Roam the Room” activity, this is an ideal way to display the cards around the room, especially if you are not allowed to use tape on your walls (crazy, I know). Look how cute those little owl are holding up the task cards. I found the cutest name card/place card holders at Hobby Lobby, and of course I immediately wondered how I could use those in the classroom. Set up a morning routine, where students know they must copy this problem in their notebooks and solve before they do anything else before classes start! You can use your document camera to project a card onto your screen, copy a problem onto your whiteboard, or simply display a tack card in a picture frame or easel. If you like to have a problem of the day, why go on a crazy search to find timely problems to use? Task cards are your friend for problem of the day. Not only is it a practical way to display and use task cards, but it’s also visually appealing! Students can either visit the cards with an answer sheet on a clipboard, or they can unpin a task card and take it back to their seat to solve. For the board shown here, I simply stapled some twine across the board and used clothespins to hang task cards on a review topic. Task cards make a great addition to bulletin boards, especially if you create the board to be a little interactive. I guess for me, it was a nice chance to take a break from lesson planning and data, and get creative. You have an instant task card review activity which students can either work on together or independently!īulletin boards have always been one of my favorite things. Print the cover of your task cards at a reduced size and slide it into the front. Simply print the task cards and slide them into the photo sleeves. If you were able to watch my FREE Teaching Ideas: There’s More Than On e Way to Use a Poster video, you know that I love these mini photo albums for use in the classroom. For example, I love the little distressed, white basket shown to the left here, along with all the fun, springtime colors! Look at that adorable watering can! Perfect to hold a set of task cards at a center! Thematic, seasonal task card displays are made easy with fun, inexpensive containers with holiday colors. I do find them handy when it comes to creating attractive, creative task card centers and displays. In fact, I may have a container obsession. Exit slips, Scoot Games ( see this post HERE), and Test Prep ( see that post HERE) are just a few! I like to get creative and display task cards for games, learning centers, or problem of the day in fun, unusual ways. There are many ways that you can use task cards in the classroom. like me!) I also have a set of FREE Task Card Organization Labels (yes, they’re editable) linked up for you at the end of this post. (You may even find some task card sets you had forgotten you even owned …. Task card organization help is here! Do you love task cards, but find them spilling out of your cupboards, closets, bins, and drawers? Are you unsure of how to best organize and display them? Today, I’m going to share some helpful tips on getting those task card collections under control and in use. Then, later on 16 January 2012, in a hidden update, the original location of the Price Checker, in the Worn equipment tab, was removed. With the addition of the Money pouch on 6 December 2011, there is a right-click option to bring up the Price Checker on the Money pouch, giving you two ways to access the Price Checker. After this price checking method is complete, the trade is declined, often annoying players, and therefore, became a common topic on the Official RuneScape forums. When offered a trade, the player will put his/her items into the trade window by doing this, the player may check the market value of items at the bottom of the trade window. To start a price check, most players would repeatedly spam "Pc", commonly at a bank or the Grand Exchange, but players would also spam it at other places and wait for someone to trade with the player. To initiate a "price check", a player trades another player to see the Grand Exchange market price of his/her items this method was used to ascertain the current worth of items in a convenient way, rather than looking each up, individually, via the Grand Exchange. Players can also utilise the price checker to lookup the price of any item available on the Grand Exchange, by clicking on the flashing yellow box at the bottom-left corner of the interface.īefore the Price Checker was introduced, players used an informal way of checking prices, typically referred to as "price check". A button was added on 17 December 2013 to quickly add all inventory items to the price checker. Attempting to add untradeable items to the price checker will prompt the message "That item isn't tradeable.".Īt the bottom of the interface, the total value of all of the items is shown at the in the centre. This is due to the fact that RuneScape uses a 32-bit integer to display the value. If the value of items displayed in the Price Checker window exceeds a certain value (2^31-1) then all that will be displayed is '-'. If a player clicks the price checker while having another interface open, a text appears saying: " Please finish what you're doing before opening the price checker." The prices of up to 28 different items can be checked in this interface. Switching between the Grand Exchange or high alchemy prices can be toggled by the icon at the bottom-left of the window. The price checker consists of small window in which items from the inventory can be added or removed, while actively displaying the total and individual current Grand Exchange market price or high alchemy price of each item(s). The interface is located within the Money pouch interface, upon performing a right click, and then left clicking Price checker, or simply left-clicking the money pouch icon. This feature was one of the player-requested features added in 2009, due to an overwhelming amount of "Price Check" spamming in-game, which was extremely annoying to the other players see History for more information on this. However you can still use the app to track your real portfolio, just buy or sell the items on the app after you do so in OSRS.The Price Checker (also spelled price-checker) interface was introduced on 25 February 2009 to allow players to check the prices of items. So something they're working on, but something to keep in mind. Industry members have recognized the need for new tire technologies to increase load carrying capacity and reduce rolling resistance in order to improve the overall wear. Let's see, something else to keep in mind is that tires have experienced an accelerated wear rate compared to the diesel equivalent due to the torque transfer and increased braking force from that regenerative braking system. It is under development though, and a lot of OEMs offer this technician training with their products. So it's maybe a little difficult to access or find kind of common training at the time. A lot of that again is related to the high voltage systems, and right now some of the training is still really being developed and standardized. It also may require some updating of tools and personal protective equipment. It could be AC and at least three-phase, because these are usually high voltage systems. Also need to develop an understanding of basic electrical systems, and this is not just DC. So the techs need to know the difference between the product architecture, so the EV versus the internal combustion engine. And this learning curve may also require some additional training, as well as equipment costs in order to properly have the right maintenance in place for the electric vehicle. They've also noted cleaner working environments and just a little more pleasant air quality as well with an EV compared to some diesel baseline systems.īut however keep in mind right now since battery electric school buses is an emerging technology that there will be a learning curve to train the technicians on this new technology. You also have a need of fewer components to access for maintenance. Technicians have also reported additional benefits of the trucks just being a little easier to work on because the components are easier to access. So this means a smaller technician to truck ratio, and therefore potentially reduced labor costs of technicians. Although we have seen some reports where they have a reduced need for the number of technicians required to maintain the trucks. But you're still going to have the usual maintenance for brakes, suspension, and tires, all that is still required. Also most battery electric buses have regenerative braking, and that reduces the brake system to be used around five times less than a conventional diesel vehicle. So an EV motor contains about 20 moving components, where an internal combustion engine generally has more than 2,000 moving components. There is also no engine oil, and there are overall fewer mechanical components. So this means no diesel exhaust fluid and no diesel particulate filter, which has in the past been known to cause additional maintenance cost, timing, and parts and labor. One of the all time favorites so far has been no longer needing an after treatment system. With battery electric buses there are some comparative benefits to that of diesel systems that are expected to reduce some of the maintenance costs. So with all technologies it is important to track the maintenance cost to fully understand your total cost of ownership. So let's get started with Module 3 of the Electric School Bus Factors, Maintenance Costs. Module 4 will review electric bus incentives and financing options, and finally Module 5 will provide information on how to have some of those financing discussions. Module 3, which we are reviewing today, will discuss electric school bus maintenance costs. Module 2 discussed electric school bus operational costs. Module 1 provided information on bus capital costs and infrastructure costs. Flipping the Switch series, Electric School Bus Cost Factors consists of five modules. Welcome to the Flipping the Switch on Electric School Buses series, where we will discuss electric school bus cost factors.
